SPF Mice - Spontaneous Mutant

NCr Nude

Nomenclature: CrTac:NCr-Foxn1nu

Model Description:

  • Outbred background originated from an accidental cross between the BALB/c inbred nude and NIH(S) outbred nude mice
  • The standard athymic model for National Cancer Institute (NCI) studies as well as many pharmaceutical and institutional oncology screening programs

Origin: Taconic received the NCr nude Spontaneous mutant model from NCI in 1993 after several years of random breeding. The mice were derived by hysterectomy to achieve Germfree status prior to introduction into Restricted Flora™ IBU colonies. These mice have both BALB/c inbred and NIH(S) outbred stock in their genetic background. Vivo Bio Tech received the breeders in June 2013 from Taconic.

Scid-beige

Nomenclature: C.B-Igh-1b/GbmsTac-Prkdcscid-Lystbg N7

Model Description:

  • The mutations were backcrossed seven generations to the congenic C.B-17 background
  • Maintained in flexible-film isolators under gnotobiotic conditions
  • This double mutant model carries the scid mutation which causes a lack of both T and B lymphocytes due to a defect in V(D)J recombination
  • It also carries the beige mutation which results in cytotoxic T cell and macrophage defects as well as selective impairment of NK cell functions. As a result, SCID-BEIGE mice are potentially an improved model for receipt of xenotransplants and for infectious disease studies
  • It has also been observed that the C.B-17 SCID-BEIGE strain has a lower incidence of serum Ig relative to the C.B-17 SCID strain

Origin: The scid-beige Spontaneous mutant model was developed by Dr. Anne Croy et al of the University of Guelph in April 1993 by intercrossing C.B-17 from R. A. Phillips to C57BL/6-bg from the Jackson Laboratory. The beige (Lyst bg) mutation was backcrossed seven generations (N7) to a C.B.17 scid spontaneous mutant background from the Ontario Cancer Institute. Vivo Bio Tech received the breeders in June 2013 from Taconic.

NOD scid

Nomenclature: NOD/MrkBomTac-Prkdcscid

Model Description:

  • The scid mutation has been transferred onto a diabetes-susceptible Non-Obese Diabetic (NOD) background, making it a good model for diabetes and obesity research for Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, Type I diabetes
  • The multiple defects in immunity unique to this model provide an excellent system for reconstitution with human hematopoietic cells, resulting in exceptional models for HIV-1 research and gene therapy
  • Useful model for cancer research into increased tumor incidence, particularly lymphomas and thymic tumors
  • Maintained in a specially equipped Isolated Barrier Unit™ (IBU™) where the flora is continuously monitored to assure the absence of specific opportunistic bacteria
  • Short life span, 8-9 months due to lethal thymic lymphomas
  • Reduced NK cell activity due to NOD background
  • Does not develop diabetes
  • Paralysis does seem to be a phenotype of NOD scid mice, however in measuring this phenotype in our colonies it is present in less than .5%

Origin: The NOD scid Spontaneous mutant model was developed by the Fox Chase Cancer Center by transferring the scid mutation from a C.B-17 congenic background to a diabetes-susceptible non-obese diabetic background. M&B A/S (now Taconic Europe) received stock from the Fox Chase Cancer Center in 1995. The mice were derived by embryo transfer in 2002 by Taconic US. The Taconic foundation colony was at F? + 14 in 2005. Vivo Bio Tech received the breeders in March 2015 from Taconic.
